Workers in Belgium Bring Life to a Standstill

In Belgium, a one-day strike organized in response to the government’s planned cuts on various social expenditures brought life to a halt. Many employees, mobilized by the country’s largest workers’ unions, opted for a one-day strike to protest the austerity measures, especially the reductions planned by the federal government in social spending on items such as unemployment and retirement. A significant number of both public and private sector workers participated in the strike, leading to considerable disruptions in services across the country. Particularly, the participation of employees providing baggage and security services in the strike negatively impacted air transportation in the country. The engagement of workers at the Brussels and Charleroi airports resulted in the cancellation of outbound flights. Due to the participation of railway workers in the strike, the majority of train services nationwide were canceled. In Brussels, the metropolitan transport system suffered almost complete cancellation of metro, bus, and tram services due to the involvement of workers. Employees of public transport companies in the Flemish and Walloon regions also joined the strike, bringing public transport nationwide to a standstill. Education was disrupted in some schools due to the extensive participation of teachers in the strike. Police officers, prison guards, and workers in the port and postal services also drew attention with their collective action. With municipal workers joining the strike, various local services such as waste collection and child care were significantly impacted. Unions strongly criticize the planned cuts in social spending and the austerity policies to be implemented by the newly formed government in the country. As a result, on February 13, a large-scale strike was organized, bringing life to a standstill once again. The new government in Belgium has prepared a program aimed at reducing public expenditures in the country. The program includes limitations on the unemployment benefits in the country, as well as reducing the duration for which these benefits can be claimed under certain conditions. Currently, in Belgium, unlimited unemployment benefits can be received if the conditions are met. Additionally, the government aims to reduce the public-supported programs offered for career changes and during unemployment. The program of the new government also involves tightening the conditions required for retirement entitlement, making the labor market more flexible, tightening the system benefiting individuals with long-term illnesses, reforming civil servants’ status and calculating retirement age and benefits, as well as changing the indexing system that automatically adjusts wages based on inflation. These policies, which involve significant changes in workers’ rights, have attracted widespread criticism from all unions and employees.
