Women constitute 49.98% of the Turkish population. According to TURKSTAT data, women earn less than men across all educational levels. 36 out of 100 women expressed feeling uneasy when walking alone at night. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) announced the results of the “Women in Statistics 2024” study. As per the findings, women made up 49.98% of the country’s population, while men accounted for 50.02%. The female population in Turkey was 42,811,834, and the male population was 42,853,110. The balance between women and men shifted in favor of women aged 60 and above due to women living longer. The female population rate was 52% in the 60-74 age group and 69.1% in the 90 and above age group. The rate of individuals aged 25 and above who completed at least one education level increased from 75.1% in 2008 to 92.2% in 2022. When examined by gender, the rate of women aged 25 and above who completed at least one education level was 67.5% in 2008, while men’s rate was 82.8%; in 2023, it became 87.8% for women and 96.8% for men. The gender pay gap favored men across all educational levels. The gender pay gap is defined as the percentage of the male wage or income difference compared to the female wage or income. According to Earnings Structure Statistics, the highest difference calculated based on the annual average gross wage occurred at 17.4% among university graduates, while the lowest difference at 13.2% was among primary school graduates or below. For the index calculated based on the annual average gross earnings, the highest difference at 20% was among high school graduates, and the lowest at 14.9% was among primary school graduates or below. According to the Turkish Grand National Assembly data, as of the end of 2024, there were 118 female members of parliament out of 593, while there were 475 male members. The proportion of female members of parliament was 9.1% in 2007 and increased to 19.9% in 2024. The proportion of female professors among all professors in higher education rose from 27.6% in the 2010-2011 academic year to 34.6% in the 2023-2024 academic year. The proportion of female associate professors among all associate professors in higher education increased from 32.2% in the 2010-2011 academic year to 42.1% in the 2023-2024 academic year. According to the Life Satisfaction Survey results in 2024, the percentage of individuals feeling insecure when walking alone at night in their neighborhood was 25.7%, with women at 35.9% and men at 15.2%. 47.8% of women and 69.7% of men felt safe when walking alone at night. The percentage of individuals feeling unsafe when alone at home was 5.8% in 2024, with women at 8.4% and men at 3.1%. 78.9% of women and 88.5% of men felt safe when alone at home. When looking at the poverty or social exclusion risk by age group according to Poverty and Living Conditions Statistics, it was observed that 29.3% of the total population were at risk in 2024, with 31.5% of women and 27.1% of men falling under this category. In the 18-64 age group, the poverty or social exclusion risk was 29.5% for women and 23.1% for men.
