What happened to the virus-infected tomatoes? Statement from Minister Yumaklı

Virus-infected tomato seeds that could endanger agriculture were detected at customs. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumaklı, stated, “They were returned to their origin. This is not something new.” Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumaklı, answered journalists’ questions in Parliament before the AK Party Parliamentary Group Meeting. In response to questions about news that viruses were detected in tomato seeds entering Turkey, Yumaklı emphasized that products entering Turkey are inspected according to standards. Yumaklı emphasized that this process continues with “zero tolerance.” He stated, “Products that do not meet the standards for us are identified in this way. They were returned to their origin. This is not something new. Different products can enter our country at different times. Their entry into our country is completed before the analysis is done. They are compared with health certificates, and if there is any discrepancy, they are returned to their origin. Apart from this, there is no situation that would cause concern for us.” Yumaklı, asked about allegations that products exported in recent days were returned due to containing high levels of pesticides, said, “We destroy what is identified before it enters the country.” Yumaklı emphasized that it is not correct information that all products returned to Turkey were sent back due to pesticides, stating, “Some of these changes are due to mold-related changes in the product known as aflatoxin. We have intensified inspections regarding this. If more than 2 products from any company are returned, we conduct a new analysis both in the packaging facility and in the field, before they exit the country and at customs. We send them after conducting 2 analyses. There has been a 35% decrease in products returned due to pesticide residue. We will continue to reduce this.”
