US Agriculture Secretary: Importing Eggs from Turkey and South Korea

The egg crisis continues in the United States.

US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated that they have imported eggs from Turkey and South Korea to alleviate the supply shortage caused by the bird flu outbreak, which has led to an increase in egg prices nationwide. Rollins mentioned that they have also discussed egg imports with other countries. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Rollins said, “Currently, we are importing eggs from Turkey and South Korea. Yesterday, I talked to several other countries, and soon we will start importing from them as well. We have not signed any agreements yet, so I do not want to disclose which countries they are.” Rollins indicated that in the short term, they are talking about “millions” of eggs, emphasizing that it is crucial for keeping prices low. Rollins mentioned that they will return to domestic egg producers once the chicken population in the country increases again and the sector operates at full capacity.

INCREASE SURPASSED 50% The recent bird flu outbreak in the US had a negative impact on egg supply nationwide. The culling of millions of chickens on farms due to the bird flu outbreak disrupted egg production and resulted in price increases. The rise in egg prices in the country reached 58.8% on an annual basis in February. Increasing egg imports due to the disruption in production, the US started importing eggs from Turkey, which it last did in January 2023.
