Turkey’s Wealthiest Provinces in Dollars! Only Three Provinces Sold Foreign Currency

The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) revealed the provinces rich in foreign currency. Istanbul became the city holding the most foreign currency in Turkey. When comparing population and foreign currency deposit data, Batman saw the highest increase in per capita foreign currency deposits in the last year. The three cities where foreign currency deposits decreased were Siirt, Yalova, and Hatay.
While economic policies increased interest in the Turkish Lira, Foreign Exchange Protected Deposits (FEPD) withdrawals also dropped below 1 trillion TRY. However, apart from only three cities in Turkey, other provinces continued to accumulate foreign currency.
MOST FOREIGN CURRENCY IN ISTANBUL
According to a report by CNBC-e compiled from foreign currency deposit data in BRSA’s FinTürk database, Istanbul, Turkey’s financial center, continues to lead the country in foreign exchange transactions.
According to BRSA data, Istanbul has a total foreign currency deposit of 2 trillion 575 billion 235 million TRY. The per capita foreign currency deposit in Istanbul is 164,000 TRY in 2024. This number was 15,324 TRY in 2023, showing an increase of 5.59% in the last year.
The city with the lowest per capita foreign currency deposit amount was Hakkari. In 2024, Hakkari’s total foreign currency deposit amount was 1 billion 623 million 805 thousand TRY, with a per capita foreign currency deposit ratio of 5,754 TRY. Following Hakkari are Şanlıurfa with 5,958 TRY and Şırnak with 5,971 TRY in this area.
After Istanbul, the other cities with total foreign currency deposits are Ankara with 765 billion 795 million 325 thousand TRY, Izmir with 289 billion 820 million 502 thousand TRY, and Antalya with 202 billion 925 million 246 thousand TRY. MOST FOREIGN CURRENCY RECEIVING PROVINCE The province that saw the highest increase in per capita foreign currency deposits in the last year nationwide is Batman. Batman has a total deposit of 9 million 640 thousand TRY, with an increase rate of 50.41% in the last year. Following Ardahan in second place is Bilecik with a 44.09% increase rate. The total foreign currency deposit in Bilecik is 5 million 873 thousand 492 TRY. ONLY 3 PROVINCES SOLD FOREIGN CURRENCY According to the latest assessments on foreign currency deposits in Turkey, the province with the lowest foreign currency deposits was Ardahan. According to statistics based on data from the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT), the total foreign currency deposits in Ardahan were recorded as 1 million 137 thousand 251 TRY. This figure represents the lowest level nationwide. However, another noteworthy data is that Ardahan ranked second nationwide in terms of the per capita foreign currency deposit amount increase in the last year with a 58.77% increase rate.
