Turkey-Azerbaijan Energy Cooperation | Minister Bayraktar: Infrastructure Ready to Double Exported Gas to Europe

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has announced that the infrastructure needed to double Azerbaijan’s gas exports to Europe by 2027 is ready. Bayraktar made these remarks during an evaluation on Azerbaijan’s Official State Television AZTV. Emphasizing that the energy cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan sets an example for the world, Bayraktar stated, “The projects we have developed here are of great importance for Europe’s natural gas supply security. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline is crucial for a more balanced global oil supply, sending 700,000 barrels of oil to the world market daily.” Minister Bayraktar highlighted that the infrastructure of the TANAP and TAP pipelines, which transport natural gas from the Caspian Sea and Turkey to Europe, has been built with a capacity of 32 billion cubic meters, aiming to double Azerbaijan’s gas exports to Europe by 2027. Stressing the need to encourage investments in gas production in the Caspian Sea, Bayraktar continued, “We are putting all our efforts into this matter. Turkey is a significant natural gas market. Our domestic market can accommodate additional capacities from Azerbaijan in the next 15 years. Turkey is a country with a growing industry and economy, increasing population. We are confident in our commitment to long-term purchases. We have been expressing this to our Azerbaijani counterparts, SOCAR, for years. When the European Union solidifies its decision, TANAP will be able to work at full capacity in this regard.” Bayraktar highlighted the addition of the Iğdır-Nakhchivan Natural Gas Pipeline between the two countries, stating, “We have established the infrastructure to supply natural gas to Nakhchivan and our brothers living there for 30 years through Turkey.” Referring to the “green energy corridor” project discussed at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), Bayraktar concluded, “In the project developed between Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, a study is underway for the electricity produced in Azerbaijan to be sent to Turkey and then to Europe. In a few days, at the annual customary meetings of the Southern Gas Corridor, we will sign an agreement as 4 countries. Electric transmission lines are being added to the 4 pipelines I mentioned. We will implement a new project with Azerbaijan that will contribute to the energy supply security of Turkey and Europe in terms of electricity, not only in the natural gas and oil sectors.”
