Trump’s New Decision: Additional Tariffs Suspended for 90 Days, Customs Duties on China Increased to 125%

Beijing responded similarly to the United States’ increase on customs duties on Chinese goods to 104% by elevating the rate to 125%. Trump wasted no time in responding to China’s retaliation. He announced that while raising tariffs on China to 125%, additional tariffs for over 75 countries that made no reciprocal response were suspended for 90 days.
The trade war between the USA and China intensifies with each passing day through announced tariffs. Trump unveiled new tariffs on China in his latest statement.
“Due to China’s disrespect for global markets, I am increasing the customs duty on China to 125% effective immediately. Hopefully, China will realize in the near future that exploiting the USA and other countries is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” Trump stated.
SUSPENSION FOR 90 DAYS TO OVER 75 COUNTRIES
Trump also announced that new tax rates imposed on over 75 countries making no retaliatory decision would be suspended for 90 days. During this period, countries would only pay a fundamental tariff of 10%.
UPTICK IN THE US STOCK MARKETS
Following Trump’s latest remarks, the US stock markets witnessed an upward trend.
“COUNTRIES THAT DON’T RECIPROCATE WILL BE REWARDED”
US Treasury Secretary Bessent stated, “Countries that do not reciprocate with taxes to the USA will be rewarded.” Bessent noted that Mexico and Canada were included in the 10% fundamental tariff decision.
“CHINA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY ESCALATING SITUATION”
US Treasury Secretary Bessent suggested that deregulation should permit banks to acquire more debt securities, emphasizing the USA’s strong dollar policy.
While acknowledging minimal uncertainty, US Treasury Secretary Bessent argued that businesses would admit the economy is “very robust.” Asserting that the economy is “quite strong,” Bessent noted that tariff levels were at their maximum if other countries did not retaliate.
The US official mentioned that 70 negotiations were lined up, with countries eager to negotiate with the USA. Bessent claimed leadership role in tariff-related negotiations and asserted that China was the only country “escalating” the current situation.
PREVIOUS RETALIATION FROM CHINA
As the new customs duty tariff by US President Donald Trump took effect today, the Chinese Ministry of Finance had already announced another retaliatory decision, imposing additional tariffs on US goods. The Ministry declared an additional tariff rate of 84% on US goods, up from the previously announced 34%. The Ministry stated that the additional tariff on US goods would be implemented starting from April 10th.
