Trump Doubles Tariffs on China

President of the United States, Donald Trump, increased customs duties on China by twice due to failures in combating the entry and addictive nature of fentanyl into the country.

President Trump, after coming to office, made changes to the decree that imposed a 10% tariff on imports from China due to fentanyl. Trump stated that China’s failure to take action to prevent the flow of fentanyl and synthetic opioids to the United States poses a threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the US, claiming that China has not taken sufficient steps to alleviate this crisis, he raised the tariff rate on imports from China to 20%. Trump had imposed a 10% customs duty on imports from China with the decree he signed on February 1. The tariff had come into effect on February 4. Trump warned that if they fail to agree, tariffs could increase, announcing through his Truth Social account on February 27 that an additional 10% tariff would be applied to China on March 4.
WHAT IS FENTANYL?
Fentanyl, a type of opioid that produces morphine-like effects in the body and is mainly used as an analgesic, is known to be addictive.
Fentanyl can be prescribed by a doctor in case of severe pain. However, it can also be illegally produced and sold. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), illegal drugs produced using chemicals imported from China are smuggled into the US from Mexico.
