SP downgrades France’s credit rating outlook to negative

The international credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s (SP) has downgraded France’s credit rating outlook to negative. The rating agency has published its evaluation of the French economy. The statement confirmed that France’s long and short-term foreign and local currency credit rating remains “AA-/A-1+.” It was noted that the country’s deteriorating public finances led to the change in credit rating outlook from stable to negative. The statement highlighted the unbalanced political support for budget consolidation in the country and emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the post-2025 fiscal strategy. It is predicted that France’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth will fall below 1% this year, further complicating the fiscal outlook. The need for France to generate a non-interest budget surplus that it has not achieved since 2001 in order to reduce its debt-to-GDP ratio was stressed. The statement mentioned the limited political support for pressures on public finances and reforms, attributing the revision of the credit rating outlook to this factor.
