SoftBank, a Japanese technology and telecommunications company, has activated a borrowing plan of $16 billion for artificial intelligence investments. According to Information, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son’s plan was submitted to banks last week. The company is also considering an additional $8 billion in borrowing by 2026. With the goal of expanding its artificial intelligence investments, the company plans to invest up to $25 billion in OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT. Previously, SoftBank had committed to a $15 billion investment in Stargate, a joint venture with Oracle and OpenAI aiming to invest up to $500 billion for U.S. artificial intelligence leadership, as announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump in January.
