The current situation at the Social Security Administration is dire, putting the benefits of the people it serves in jeopardy. It is not without weight that we express this concern, given our extensive experience in high-ranking positions within the Social Security Administration, under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Throughout our long careers in this field, we have witnessed the resilience of the Social Security system in overcoming various obstacles. However, the current administration of Social Security programs faces a more serious threat than ever before.

Recent announcements have revealed plans to slash at least 7,000 employees and consolidate services by shutting down six regional offices within the Social Security Administration. These cuts, as indicated by the acting Social Security commissioner appointed by the Trump administration, are a result of the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk.

Even before these significant workforce reductions were announced, the Social Security Administration was grappling with substantial challenges in customer service. The abrupt and seemingly arbitrary cuts now proposed put Americans’ access to their rightfully earned benefits at risk.

When individuals need to claim their benefits or resolve issues, they have three primary avenues: visiting a field office, contacting the 800 number, or going online to SSA.gov. The repercussions of these cuts will ripple through all three service channels, causing longer wait times at field offices, additional delays on the already strained 800 number, and perhaps slower functioning and errors on the website.

Moreover, a recent policy change dictates that millions of people will now have to visit packed field offices instead of making phone calls to resolve issues.

The erosion of customer service quality and benefit accessibility transcends mere bureaucratic implications; it equates to a de facto reduction in a program that garners bipartisan support and proves vital for financial security across the American populace.

Accessing the Social Security benefits rightfully earned will become a more arduous and time-consuming process. Certain individuals might not be able to obtain their benefits or address pressing matters at all. Imagine the frustration of waiting endlessly on the phone line to secure retirement benefits, or the plight of widows and widowers with young children struggling to claim survivor benefits after losing a spouse.

Those most severely impacted by these cuts are individuals with disabilities. Already, many Americans perish while awaiting hearings for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits annually, a process that can extend over months or years – this wait is likely to grow even lengthier.

Concerns extend beyond customer service deterioration; with crucial personnel leaving and an ongoing loss of institutional knowledge, the Social Security Administration could face catastrophic failures in its operations. The outdated and intricate infrastructure of Social Security, including systems reliant on 1950s and ’60s programming languages like COBOL, poses additional challenges for maintaining operational efficiency.

In nearly 90 years of its existence, Social Security has never faltered in making timely payments. However, without prompt intervention from Congress, this track record could be compromised. Preserving Social Security is not an issue segregated by political lines; citizens of all affiliations actively endorse and depend on the program for financial security.

Public statements from the Trump administration’s acting Social Security commissioner highlighting potential “breakage” and lack of familiarity with SSA intricacies emphasize the gravity of the situation. It is imperative for lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to collaborate in safeguarding Social Security from collapse.

Encouraging legislators to respond promptly and reverse certain workforce cuts is paramount, as further delays could lead to disgruntled constituents being unable to access benefits. Inaction from Congress could swiftly transform service delays into service denials, marking a catastrophic blow to the Social Security Administration.

The urgency of the matter underscores the necessity for immediate bipartisan action to secure the future of the Social Security program.
