Retaliation of Tax Measures Expected from Europe to the US

Europe is taking its first step today against the customs duties imposed by the US. The EU is preparing to apply additional taxes to many products such as steel, automobiles, fruits, and clothing. The European Union (EU) is set to approve its first retaliatory measures against the additional customs duties imposed by US President Donald Trump today. While Trump’s reciprocity-based additional customs duties, which came into effect today, intensify trade wars, they also strengthen concerns about a recession and lead to increased losses in the stock market. The new taxes will also include a 104% tariff on products imported from China. As part of Trump’s customs duties, as of today, EU countries are faced with a 25% tariff on steel, aluminum, and automobile imports, and a 20% tariff on many other products. The European Commission proposed on Monday to impose an additional 25% customs duty on US products in response to the customs duties imposed by the US on steel and aluminum. The Commission is still evaluating how to respond to the automotive sector and other customs duties. According to documents reviewed by Reuters, the products that the EU plans to impose customs duties on include motorcycles, poultry, fruits, wood, clothing, and dental floss. The total value of these products was around 21 billion euros (23 billion dollars) last year. The volume of metal exports from the EU affected by US tariffs was 26 billion euros last year. The EU’s measures are expected to be gradually implemented on April 15, May 16, and December 1.
