Prison Sentences for Traffic Crimes Coming! Heavy Penalties for Road Obstruction, Drifting, and Drunk Driving…

In the upcoming days, a new judicial package will be presented to the Parliament, which will also regulate the penalties for traffic crimes. While prison sentences will be introduced for drunk driving and road obstruction, fines for drifting, reckless lane change, and failure to yield to ambulances will be increased. The Ministry of Justice continues to work on the new judicial package. The package will include regulations aimed at those who endanger the lives and property of people in traffic, in addition to changes in the penalty enforcement system. Penalties for those who drift, drive without a license, and drive under the influence of alcohol will be increased. In the new judicial package, the minimum period of imprisonment for drunk driving will be raised from 3 months to 6 months. The regulation also foresees that those driving under the influence of alcohol will spend at least 36 days and up to 144 days in prison. The penalty for drunk driving will also increase from 9,267 Turkish liras to 50,000 Turkish liras. The confiscation period of the driver’s license will also be extended from 6 months to 1 year. The penalty for driving under the influence of drugs, currently at 47,842 Turkish liras, will also be raised to 100,000 Turkish liras. The fine for drifting, which is currently 46,392 Turkish liras, will be increased to 80,000 Turkish liras. The period for license suspension, currently set at 60 days, will be extended to one year. The regulation will also address reckless lane change. The penalty for reckless lane change, currently at 9,267 Turkish liras, will be applied as 50,000 Turkish liras, with a one-year license suspension. It is also proposed in the package that the fine for driving without a license be increased from 18,677 Turkish liras to 40,000 Turkish liras. The penalty for failing to yield to an ambulance, firefighting, or police vehicle, currently at 993 Turkish liras, will be raised to 20,000 Turkish liras. The crime of obstructing traffic will be included in the Turkish Penal Code. Those who commit this crime will face imprisonment from 1 to 3 years and a one-year license suspension.
