Opportunism in Scrap Vehicle Market: Prices Doubled

The rumor about a Special Consumption Tax deduction for scrap vehicles has been on the agenda for a while. This issue, not on the government’s agenda, started to make headlines with a bill presented to the Parliament by a member of parliament. The proposal presented to the Parliament has not even been discussed in the commissions, let alone entered into the process of legislation. Nevertheless, just the rumor of scrap vehicle incentives was enough. According to the information obtained from the sources of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the scrap vehicle proposal will not become law. However, scrap vehicles older than 25 years are being advertised for at least twice their value. The rumor of a scrap vehicle incentive being introduced spread. Vehicles are being offered for sale at least double their regular price. A law proposal regarding scrap vehicles was submitted to the Parliament by a member of parliament, covering vehicles over 25 years old. The proposal includes exempting those with such vehicles from SCT when buying a new vehicle. Dozens of bills are submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly by members of parliament every day. One of these proposals stood out, and it was interpreted by the public as “A law granting SCT exemption for scrap vehicles is coming.” The government has no work on this matter, and the bill has not even reached the commissions yet. MHP Kayseri MP Ismail Özdemir submitted a bill to the Parliament a few days ago, proposing an SCT reduction for those who scrap their vehicles and purchase new vehicles made in Turkey. According to the information obtained from the sources of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the scrap vehicle proposal will not become law. The rumor of a scrap vehicle incentive stirred up the market. Old model vehicles are being offered for sale at higher prices than their worth on second-hand trading ad sites. Scrap vehicles in the 50-60 thousand lira range have started to be advertised at double the price. With expectations about the proposal decreasing, it is expected that the prices will return to normal levels. It is also known that those who fueled these speculations gathered a large number of scrap vehicles from the market by saying “The Incentive Law will be enacted.” The scrap vehicle incentive was first implemented in Turkey in 2003. This helped to remove vehicles above a certain age from the market while increasing new vehicle sales. This practice ended in 2004.
