Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that with the simultaneous triple independent runway operation starting today at Istanbul Airport, three planes can land or take off on completely separate runways at the same time. Uraloğlu emphasized that a historic step has been taken in air traffic management at Istanbul Airport. The “simultaneous triple independent runway operation” at Istanbul Airport will start today. Uraloğlu mentioned that the system will start at 10.00 and said, “With this system, three planes can land or take off on completely separate runways at Istanbul Airport at the same time.” The FIRST AIRPORT IN EUROPE TO USE THE SYSTEM APPLIED IN THE US Uraloğlu pointed out that with the activation of the system, the runways will be used efficiently. Uraloğlu stated that with the triple independent runway operation, the flow of traffic at Istanbul Airport will accelerate and its dynamic capacity will increase. Uraloğlu used the phrase, “The triple independent runway operation is being implemented in the US. Istanbul Airport will be the first airport in Europe to start triple runway operations.” Uraloğlu mentioned that project studies started in the last quarter of 2022, and meetings, risk analyzes, safety studies, and simulations were conducted in cooperation with EUROCONTROL, State Airports Authority, and General Directorate of Civil Aviation with Turkish Airlines in 2023 and 2024. Uraloğlu indicated that all necessary preparations have been completed in line with the safety analysis report prepared by EUROCONTROL, stating: “New airspace design has been made, control systems have been made suitable for triple operations, airlines have been informed. Our air traffic controllers have been trained with our domestic and national simulator. The technology required to support triple runway operations is highly advanced and complex. The system includes advanced radar systems, precise navigation aids, and robust air traffic control protocols. All these components ensure the safe conduct of simultaneous operations and the uninterrupted flow of air and ground traffic. The system also includes automated structures that predict flight routes and flows, playing a significant role in preventing runway incursions and ensuring smooth traffic management.”
