New decision for 8+1 taxis in Istanbul

A proposal concerning the conversion of 717 vehicles from 8+1 taxis to regular taxis in Istanbul was referred to the sub-commission. During the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) meeting, the proposal to convert 717 vehicles transformed from minibuses and taxi shuttles into 8+1 taxis back to regular taxis was sent for further discussion to the sub-commission. The UKOME meeting, chaired by IBB Deputy Secretary General Gürkan Akgün, took place at the Çırpıcı Social Facilities. During the meeting, changes were proposed to the conversion commitment clause of 717 vehicles converted from taxi shuttles and minibuses to 8+1 taxis, stating that “Transporters whose minibus license plates are converted to taxi plates cannot switch to yellow, black, or turquoise taxis for at least 3 years.” Within the agenda item, a proposal was made to allow the 717 vehicles operating as 8+1 to transition to regular 4+1 taxis. The proposal for the establishment of legislation to enable “Corporate Taxi Operation” to work with businesses wanting to provide services with 8+1 vehicles for rental to legal entities was also discussed as part of the same agenda item. In this context, it was stated that businesses could either rent out their vehicles or undergo the transformation. Sector representatives requested separate votes for the section regarding the leasing of taxis to legal entities and the transformation of 717 vehicles converted from minibuses and taxi shuttles to 8+1 taxis into regular taxis. IBB Deputy Secretary General Akgün stated that they would vote on both parts simultaneously. At the meeting where both parts were voted on simultaneously, the agenda item was rejected by majority vote. Therefore, it was decided to refer the item back to the sub-commission for further discussion.
