Minister Bolat: Situation heating up, primary goal avoid taking a punch

The trade war ignited by US President Donald Trump’s announcement of additional customs duties for 185 countries is intensifying. As mutual retaliation decisions increase uncertainty in world trade; Trade Minister Ömer Bolat stated that Turkey is prepared for the developments.

Trade Minister Ömer Bolat stated that Turkey is prepared for the trade wars arising from the United States’ additional customs duties.

Bolat remarked, “The situation is chaotic, it’s unclear who is throwing punches at whom, the primary goal is to avoid taking a punch.” He revealed that they are conducting comprehensive work in close contact with sectors and emphasized that the process of updating the Customs Union in force between Turkey and the EU is among their priority issues. Speaking at the EXPO Osaka 2025 Presentation Meeting in Istanbul, Minister Bolat pointed out that countries losing access to the US market may turn to the markets where Turkey exports. Bolat stated, “Not only in US relations but also in Europe and Asia, there will be significant dynamics, risks will be encountered. There is a risk that countries unable to find opportunities in the US market might rush into our markets. Therefore, we will conduct a multidimensional diplomacy.” Turkey will participate in the EXPO Osaka 2025, with the theme of the Golden Age of Civilizations, in the city of Osaka, Japan, from April 13 to October 13. In the pavilion covering an area of 900 square meters, Turkey will be introduced to the world in every field from tourism to trade.
