Mezgit and Horse Mackerel Replace Anchovies

Mezgit and horse mackerel have taken the place of anchovies at fish counters. Horse mackerel and mezgit are being sold for prices ranging between 100 and 125 lira. In the fish counters located at Moloz in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon, a small amount of anchovies can be found for 175 lira, while horse mackerel and mezgit are priced between 100 and 125 lira, salmon at 200 lira, sea bass and bream at 300 lira, and trout at 175 to 150 lira. Fisherman Mustafa Karslı stated that these days approaching the end of Ramadan have been very prosperous for the season. Karslı mentioned that people are also showing interest in various fish being offered for reasonable prices, saying, “Horse mackerel and mezgit are being sold for prices ranging between 100 and 125 lira. Horse mackerel and mezgit have now taken the place of bonito and anchovies.” He also pointed out that the fishing ban is coming to an end soon, and with the increase in pole fishing, horse mackerel and mezgit will have a more prominent place at the counters in the coming days. Fisherman Turgay Memiş also shared that people have been showing interest in fish varieties during Ramadan, stating, “Ramadan has been very nice. Counters have been adorned with fish such as horse mackerel, red mullet, mullet, trout, bream, and sea bass.”
