Heavy Fines Imposed for Price Gouging Before Ramadan

Inspections on food prices intensified before the month of Ramadan. Heavy fines were imposed on businesses found to be applying excessive prices. Under the consumer protection legislation, the Ministry of Trade imposed 139.2 million TL in administrative fines in January 2025; and 144.5 million TL in administrative fines as a result of unfair and excessive price inspections. A total of 22,818 companies were inspected for price tags in January. As a result of these inspections, 7,367 companies found to be non-compliant were fined 55.6 million TL in administrative fines. Price tag inspections were carried out in 13,123 markets, and non-compliant markets were fined 32.5 million TL in administrative fines. Similarly, tariff and price lists in 6,454 restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and similar food and beverage service establishments were examined during the same period. A total of 9.7 million TL in administrative fines were issued within this scope. Furthermore, the General Directorate of Domestic Trade inspected a total of 14,583 companies in the automotive, real estate, jewelry sectors for excessive pricing and other issues since the beginning of 2025. As a result of these inspections, companies were fined a total of 17.8 million TL directly, and the Unfair Pricing Assessment Board imposed 126.7 million TL in administrative fines.
