Global Trade War: EU Heading to Negotiate with US

Maros Sefcovic, the European Union (EU) Commissioner for Trade, will be heading to Washington on Monday for talks on tariffs. EU Commission Spokesperson Olof Gill, during a daily press briefing held in Brussels, made statements regarding the discussions on US tariffs. Gill stated that Sefcovic, the official responsible for commercial issues and negotiations at the EU Commission, will be meeting with US officials in Washington on Monday and emphasized that the EU is willing to reach a mutually beneficial agreement with the US. Gill highlighted the need to avoid any tensions that could harm both sides of the Atlantic and the global economy, mentioning that Sefcovic will travel to Washington with goodwill and seeking solutions that can benefit everyone. It is expected that Sefcovic will meet with top US officials such as US Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The EU side hopes to sit down at the negotiation table with the US and reach an agreement on tariffs. In a statement made yesterday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed the willingness to give negotiations a chance after US President Donald Trump announced the suspension of additional tariffs on trade partners outside of China for 90 days, stating, “While finalizing the preparations for EU countermeasures, which have received strong support from our member states, we will suspend them for 90 days.”
