Following Supermarkets, Restaurants Are Next! Price Application Coming

After tackling exorbitant prices in supermarkets, the focus is shifting to restaurants. The Ministry of Industry and Technology, which gathers market prices on a single platform, is also planning to take action for restaurants. Providing prices to citizens through digital means is foreseen to combat high prices in the restaurant sector. Following the “Market Price” application that exposed price games in supermarkets, steps are being taken for restaurants. The Ministry of Industry and Technology and TÜBİTAK had launched the “marketfiyati.org.tr” platform for comparing market prices. The platform, allowing citizens to compare nearly 50,000 products, quickly gained significant interest. Hosting over 1 million unique visitors in 3 days, the platform witnessed millions of product comparisons. The platform revealed price differences up to twice as much for the same product among chain markets like A101, BİM, CarrefourSA, HAKMAR, MİGROS, Tarım Kredi, and ŞOK.
STATEMENT FROM MINISTER KACIR
Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır mentioned that a similar application could be implemented for restaurants. Speaking on CNN Türk live broadcast, Minister Kacır stated, “A similar step could be taken regarding restaurants. We’re in talks. When you go to a restaurant, you can only see the prices until you reach the door. However, digital means are widely available. The more we provide these digital means to our citizens, the better. This way, we also expose opportunists. The step we are taking is aimed at protecting both consumers and producers. Therefore, we will tighten these measures.” Emphasizing that this alone will not significantly reduce inflation, Kacır said, “These are fair and competition-allowing steps that will contribute to combating inflation. We will take steps that meet the expectations of our citizens.”
