Evaluation of Inflation by Istanbul Chamber of Commerce President Avdagic

The President of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, Şekib Avdagiç, stated that “we hope to achieve results quickly in the fight against inflation, which has left behind 20 months.” The President of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO) Şekib Avdagiç emphasized that the fight against inflation and price stability continue to be the main agenda in the Turkish economy. Şekib Avdagiç pointed out that the annual CPI decreased to 42% in January, and recalled that the Central Bank increased its year-end inflation forecast from 21% in the report announced in November to 24% in the Inflation Report of February, attributing the revision to changes in the CPI basket, updated assumptions on food prices, and the increase in administered/directed prices in January. Avdagiç emphasized that both in the report and in the statements of Central Bank officials, attention was drawn to the contribution of fiscal policy to the fight against inflation. Avdagiç stated, “This revision is seen as a necessary update based on transparency and data on behalf of the Central Bank. However, we must keep in mind that upward updates are not desired for trust in the disinflation program.” Avdagiç noted that the 23-point decrease in inflation on an annual basis to 42% as of January is an important outcome, and made the evaluation that “we hope to achieve results quickly in the fight against inflation, which has left behind 20 months.”
