The spokesperson for the European Union (EU) Commission, Olof Gill, stated that the EU is prepared for any response from the US to the measures taken by the EU against US steel and aluminum tariffs. Gill, speaking at a daily press conference in Brussels, commented on President Donald Trump’s statements yesterday regarding the implementation of additional tariffs in response to the EU applying tariffs against the US. Gill emphasized that they are prepared for any response from the US, saying, “Yes, we are prepared for anything that may come from the US. We have been preparing for over a year.” Expressing deep concern regarding the 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports that the US started yesterday, Gill called on the US to immediately revoke the tariffs. Gill stated that they want to negotiate with the US to prevent tariffs and reiterated their readiness for the possible outcomes of the decision made by the US yesterday. The 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports imposed by the US went into effect on March 12. In response to the US starting additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the EU announced that countermeasures totaling 26 billion euros will be applied. The EU also published a list of US products that could be subject to retaliatory customs duties. The 99-page product list includes items such as meat, poultry, dairy products, nuts, coffee, fruits and vegetables, alcoholic beverages, gum, e-cigarettes, American-icon whiskey, clothing, hand tools, machinery, and motorcycles.
