Elon Musk Makes a $97 Billion Offer for OpenAI

A bidding war between two tech giants has emerged as American billionaire and the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, along with an investment group he heads, offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, developer of Artificial Intelligence ChatGPT, rejected the offer by saying, “If you want, I can buy Twitter for $9.75 billion.”
Musk, leading the investment group that made the offer to acquire the developer of ChatGPT, OpenAI, set the stage for a high-stakes negotiation. This claim was initially reported yesterday in The Wall Street Journal. Musk, with his legal representative, submitted the $97.4 billion offer to OpenAI’s board of directors via his attorney. According to Musk’s attorney, the American billionaire argues that OpenAI should return to its “once open-source, security-focused, and serving the public good” roots.
OPENAI CEO ALTAMAN REJECTS THE OFFER
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declined Musk’s offer through his platform X, stating, “No, thank you. But if you wish, we can acquire Twitter for $9.74 billion.” He used the former name “Twitter” instead of X. Musk, in response, called it a “scam.” OpenAI was established in 2015 in a non-profit structure with involvement from numerous individuals, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Musk stepped down from the board in 2018.
