Egg Prices Double in 9 Months

Eggs are practically the main and cheapest source of protein in almost every household. However, the recent increase in prices has also started to affect the purchasing power of eggs. Industry representatives, on the other hand, believe that the rise in prices is temporary. (Reporter: Sinan Kunter)
Whether it’s organic, free-range in the field, or waiting in a coop, the price increase affects every kind of egg. The cheapest egg in the market is being sold for at least eight liras. While in some supermarkets, the price can drop to 6.5 liras, it can go up to 14 liras depending on the type. Egg sellers say that ten days ago, one egg was priced at 6 liras, now it’s 8 liras. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) data, egg prices have doubled in the last nine months. In the past month alone, the price increase has approached 10 percent.
According to sellers, eggs are leaving producers at a higher price, and additional costs are added before reaching the consumer. While some news sources attribute the increase in egg prices to exports, industry representatives believe that the effects of the avian flu seen about five months ago are still ongoing.
Production cannot meet the egg demand in the market. There is a possibility that prices may drop in at least two weeks.
