Egg Crisis in the US: Seeking Help from Turkey

According to a report by Reuters news agency, the United States is struggling with rising egg prices and has requested assistance from Turkey, Denmark, and some other European countries.

The egg crisis continues in the United States.

In order to tackle the rising egg prices, the United States has asked Turkey, Denmark, and some other European countries to export eggs to the US. This request from the US Department of Agriculture coincided with new tariff threats made by US President Donald Trump against European countries and many other nations. Trump also threatened Denmark with economic sanctions if they did not hand over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, to the US. In a document examined by Reuters, it is seen that a representative of the US Department of Agriculture in Europe sent an official letter to egg-producing countries at the end of February, asking if they could supply eggs to the US market. In a new letter sent to the Danish egg producers’ association at the beginning of March, the estimated amount of eggs that could be sent to the US was requested. The Danish institution stated that it would consider the request but pointed out that there is not an excess of egg production in Europe; on the contrary, there is a shortage of egg supply worldwide due to increasing consumption and the bird flu outbreak. İbrahim Afyon, the President of the Egg Producers Central Association (YUM-BİR) in Turkey, stated that they have reached an agreement with the US for the export of approximately 15,000 tons of eggs due to the bird flu outbreak causing a shortage in egg supply. He mentioned that the shipments, which began in February, will continue until July.
