Drop in Temperature Leads to Increase in Fish Prices

The rainy and cold weather in Trabzon is negatively affecting daily life. Fishermen are unable to go out to sea, which has caused the prices of fish at the markets to rise. Fishermen have also highlighted the decreased demand for fish among the public.

At the Moloz location in the Ortahisar district, the price per kilogram is 150 for horse mackerel and whiting, 250 for salmon, 350 for bluefish, 300 to 350 for sea bass, 150 for anchovies, and 175 for each mackerel sold to consumers. Fisherman Onur Örseloğlu stated that the cold and rainy weather has led to an increase in prices. Örseloğlu mentioned that a slight increase in temperatures could positively impact fishing, saying, “Fish is a necessity for our citizens at reasonable prices. We are hoping for an improvement in the weather. Let the consumers benefit and let us benefit too.” He highlighted the continuous interest in fish among the people of Trabzon, mentioning, “People in Trabzon never give up on fish. Those who planned to buy 2 kilograms still come and purchase 1.5 kilograms. There is no shortage of fish varieties. There are fluctuations in prices, which is beyond our control.”

LOW DEMAND FOR FISH Fisherman Emin Avcı stated that there is currently low demand for fish, mentioning, “Due to adverse weather conditions, fish are scarce. We are putting farmed fish like salmon and sea bass on our stands. Since fish is scarce, the prices naturally increase.” Resident Yaşar Keleş expressed his preference for salmon, saying, “Fish is expensive, but there’s nothing we can do about it. We buy occasionally. Previously, this place used to be full on Sundays, but not anymore when looking at the prices.”
