Contraction in the Automobile and Light Commercial Vehicle Market

The market for automobiles and light commercial vehicles shrank by 14.2 percent in the January-February period compared to the previous year, totaling 159,384 units. The automobile and light commercial vehicle market in Turkey saw a contraction of 14.2 percent in the January-February period, recorded as 159,384 units versus the same period last year. According to the February 2025 data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ADMA), automobile sales decreased by 9.8 percent to 131,965 units and light commercial vehicle sales dropped by 30.4 percent to 27,419 units in the January-February period compared to the previous year. In February alone, the automobile and light commercial vehicle market contracted by 14.4 percent to 90,730 units compared to February 2024, with automobile sales decreasing by 7.6 percent to 76,021 units while light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 38 percent to 14,709 units.

SUVs were the most preferred vehicle type, making up 82.6 percent of the market, with A, B, and C segments featuring low tax rates leading the way. The C segment led with 74,343 units and a 56.3 percent share, followed by the B segment with 34,175 units and a 25.9 percent share. When classified by body type, SUVs were the most favored at 58.6 percent share and 77,344 units. Sedans followed with a 24.6 percent share and 32,481 units, while Hatchbacks/Wagons came in at a 16.1 percent share and 21,238 units. Petrol car sales accounted for a 49.6 percent share at 65,517 units, hybrid car sales had a 28.7 percent share at 37,864 units, electric car sales had a 12.7 percent share at 16,698 units, diesel car sales had an 8.7 percent share at 11,430 units, and LPG car sales had a 0.3 percent share at 456 units.

Electric car sales showed an increase, with electric cars under 160 kW growing by 41.1 percent to a 9 percent share, and electric cars over 160 kW increasing by 259.1 percent to a 3.6 percent share. Car sales with engine capacities below 1600cc decreased by 32.8 percent to a 58 percent share, while car sales in the 1600-2000cc range declined by 31.9 percent to a 0.4 percent share. Car sales with engine capacities over 2000cc increased by 22 percent to a 0.3 percent share. Automatic transmission cars accounted for a 94.2 percent share with 124,287 units, while manual transmission cars reached a 5.8 percent share with 7,678 units. In the light commercial vehicle market, vans were the most preferred body type with a 73.5 percent share and 20,158 units, followed by pickup trucks at a 12.9 percent share with 3,544 units.
