Consumer Call before Ramadan: Compare Receipts

With just a few days left until Ramadan, the prices of products like dates, pita bread, and soft drinks tend to increase, especially before the holy month. Consumer associations are urging people to compare receipts to combat exorbitant price hikes.
Less than two weeks remain until the beginning of Ramadan. Every year, there is an increase in demand for certain products before Ramadan. Prices can be raised for items such as pita bread, dates, and soft drinks. Consumer associations have warned the public against excessively high price increases. Bursa Consumer Association President Sıtkı Yılmaz stated, “Everyone should know that consumers are the best regulators of the market. We know you receive receipts and invoices when shopping. Compare the price tags on receipts you received in February with the prices you paid by the end of February.”
WHERE CAN EXCESSIVE PRICES BE REPORTED? Consumers can report a significant increase in the price of a product. These products can be reported to the Unfair Price Evaluation Board through the e-government system. Additionally, requests for inspections can be made to provincial trade directorates and relevant chambers.
Yılmaz emphasized, “Our consumers should act very consciously and continue to fulfill their responsibilities for monitoring. Everyone should be confident that we will make every effort possible for consumers.” In its first meeting of 2025, the Unfair Price Evaluation Board imposed a total of 126.7 million Turkish liras in fines.
