Concerning Statement from Gazprom on Europe

Gazprom claimed that Europe will face difficulties in filling underground storage facilities next summer. The Russian energy company Gazprom alleged that Europe is experiencing a decrease in reliable natural gas suppliers and will have difficulties filling underground storage facilities next summer. The statement from Gazprom included assessments of developments in the European natural gas sector. It was pointed out in the statement that European countries are rapidly consuming natural gas in underground storage facilities, with 34.3 billion cubic meters of gas remaining in these storages as of March 31. The statement also noted that the withdrawal of gas from storages in Europe had reached a record level, despite temperatures following seasonal norms. The statement conveyed that Europe would begin the storage filling period with a significant number of empty storages, and mentioned that Europe will struggle to fill underground storage facilities this summer and prepare for the upcoming winter due to the decreasing reliable gas sources. Prior to the conflict in Ukraine, Gazprom was Europe’s largest natural gas supplier and had increased its market share on the continent up to 40% by 2022 through approximately 50 years of pipeline investments. Due to sanctions, Gazprom lost its customers to liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers such as the U.S., Qatar, and Norway. While Gazprom delivered around 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe last year, the volume was at 201.7 billion cubic meters in 2021.
