China’s Barrier Hinders iPhone Production in India

Apple’s main supplier Foxconn’s plan to produce iPhones in India has been hindered by China.
Foxconn’s plan to expand its operations in India to produce iPhones has hit a roadblock due to Chinese restrictions on technology and talent exports. According to the Financial Times, Chinese authorities have made it difficult for engineers and essential production equipment to leave the country. Foxconn had announced last month that its fourth-quarter earnings had reached a record level, increasing by 15.17% compared to the previous year and by 15.03% compared to the previous quarter. Analysts have likened Beijing’s strategy to restrictions on technology transfers in Western countries.
China’s Ministry of Commerce had called for new export restrictions on technologies related to lithium and advanced battery materials. While unofficial controls from China targeted India, projects in Southeast Asia and the Middle East were reported to be largely unaffected. Experts noted that the restrictions were part of China’s strategy to retain critical technologies in the face of the US and EU.
