China Retaliates Against US with New Tariff Increase: Customs Duty Raised to 125%

Responding to the 145% customs duty imposed by the US, China increased the tariff rate to 125%, as announced by the Ministry of Finance.
The “trade war” initiated by US President Donald Trump in January 2025, with increases in customs duty rates, continues. Following yesterday’s announcement by the US stating the customs duty tariff on Chinese imported products was 145%, China made a new move. China’s Ministry of Finance declared that the additional customs duty tariff on the US would be raised from 84% to 125%. The new tariff will be effective for all US products starting this Saturday, April 12th.
FIRST REMARK FROM CHINESE PRESIDENT XI
Moreover, Chinese President Xi Jinping made his first public comment on the “tariff war” with the US during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his delegation. Xi mentioned that his nation is “not afraid” and expressed that “no one wins in a trade war; going against the world only leads to isolation.”
President Xi explained that China’s more than 70-year development has been based on self-sufficiency and hard work, emphasizing that they are not afraid of any unfair pressure. He stated, “No matter how the external environment changes, China will remain confident and focused, continuing to manage its own affairs independently.”
Xi hinted at the possibility of China and the EU forming a united front on tariffs, mentioning that “China and Europe should fulfill their international responsibilities and resist unilateral and domineering practices together.” He added that this would not only protect their legitimate rights and interests but also secure international justice and rights.
