Changes in Driving Licenses in Europe

The European Union will transition to a uniform digital driver’s license by the end of 2030. The Council of the European Union announced that an agreement has been reached between member states and the European Parliament on new rules for driver’s licenses. The statement mentioned that with the update of the driver’s license directive, the minimum requirements for driver’s eligibility will change across EU countries, and the rules for probationary periods for novice drivers will be harmonized. The changes will result in rules and regulations regarding driver’s licenses being more rational, comprehensive, and in line with the digital society, according to the statement. It was stated in the announcement that by the end of 2030, there will be a uniform mobile license for all EU citizens. The digital license will be integrated into the future European digital identity card. The digital license will be recognized in all EU member states. The statement also mentioned that those who wish can still obtain a physical copy of their driver’s licenses. If the driver’s license is used as an identity card as well, it will be valid for 10 years, while the validity period for driving an automobile or a motorcycle will be 15 years.
