Artificial Intelligence’s Cost to Health Reaches $5.4 Billion

The massive air pollution and health impacts of artificial intelligence have raised concerns. A study estimated that huge investments have led to a health cost of $5.4 billion. Artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly advancing, with giant companies making investments worth billions of dollars. However, the effects of these investments on air pollution and human health are alarming. It was revealed that artificial intelligence investments by companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta have created massive health costs. A new study by UC Riverside and Caltech revealed that the pollution from Big Tech’s data centers has cost the U.S. public health system an estimated $5.4 billion in the past five years. It was noted that these data centers require a large amount of electricity, which is mostly sourced from fossil fuels. Researchers stated that the air pollution resulting from high energy consumption has led to an increase in cases of cancer, asthma, and other diseases. It was calculated that in 2023, pollution from data centers increased health costs by 20% compared to the previous year, reaching $1.5 billion. It was estimated that between 2019-2023, Google was responsible for the highest health cost at $2.6 billion, followed by Microsoft at $1.6 billion, and Meta at $1.2 billion. Google, Microsoft, and Meta criticized the research, claiming that it exaggerated pollution levels and expressed outrage at the results. It is expected that Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta will spend over $300 billion on artificial intelligence this year.
