Agricultural Frost Damage: Will Prices Rise in Supermarkets?

Unexpectedly severe and prolonged cold weather led to detrimental agricultural frost damage. Potatoes were left in the fields, while fruits, vegetables, and grains suffered significant losses. It is expected that prices of products affected by agricultural frost will increase. Concerns about crop yields are rising in fruit and vegetable production areas. Agricultural frost occurred in Cukurova between 22nd and 25th of February. The four-day frost negatively impacted agricultural production in the region, causing early potatoes to burn in most fields. Other types of potatoes also had reduced yields and harvests were postponed by a month. President of the Yuregir Chamber of Agriculture, Mehmet Akın Doğan, stated, “We knew there would be frost but according to the data we received from the Meteorology, we were expecting temperatures between -1 and -3, but it dropped to -5 and -8. Some of our farmers burned tires, straw, and chaff, but due to the extreme lows, we couldn’t protect our crops.” Citrus trees suffered dried leaves, with lemons experiencing significant damage. Grapefruits, tangerines, and oranges also saw decreased production. The situation is not much better for citrus fruits and grain crops. Farmers are expressing their distress and requesting deferment of credit debts. Doğan mentioned, “We lost all the early peaches, and since the late peaches did not bloom, the damage rate is lower there. We lost early vegetables and fruits, but our wheat crops suffered greatly. Farmers irrigated their wheat and are expecting very low yields.” It is anticipated that the prices of products affected by agricultural frost will rise in supermarkets in the coming weeks.
