The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned that the EU would retaliate if the US imposes tariffs on the EU. Von der Leyen stated, “Let me be clear, we are one of the world’s largest markets. We will use all the necessary tools to protect our economic security and interests.” She delivered this message at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. Von der Leyen emphasized the need for Europe to adapt and remain intelligent and open-minded in the face of recent global issues being treated as a commercial transaction. She highlighted the EU’s focus on enhancing competitiveness, strengthening defense, and innovating in the field of artificial intelligence, stressing the importance of taking action in the new reality. Von der Leyen mentioned the benefits of a stronger Europe collaborating with the US against common threats, stating, “This is why we believe that trade wars and punitive tariffs make no sense.” She pointed out that customs duties equate to taxes and could raise inflation, expressing concerns about how rapidly customs tariffs can impact transatlantic supply chains. Von der Leyen made it clear that in case the US imposes tariffs on the EU, retaliation will follow, ensuring that unjust tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered. She concluded by confirming that all measures would be taken to protect workers, businesses, and consumers at every stage. Von der Leyen also expressed readiness to work towards a deal that benefits all parties involved.
