A strong product safety period in online shopping will begin tomorrow. Sellers will now share product details in a more comprehensive way. Inappropriate ads will be removed within 24 hours. Foreign sellers will be required to have a local representative. The Regulation on Market Surveillance and Inspection of Products Offered to the Market via Remote Communication Tools, ensuring transparency and product safety in online shopping, will come into force tomorrow. The regulation, prepared by the Ministry of Trade and published in the Official Gazette dated October 30, 2024, will be effective tomorrow after a 5-month transition period. The statement noted that the regulation aims to ensure transparency and product safety in online shopping while also protecting the rights of consumers, bringing important innovations for both citizens and product-selling companies. Product information will be presented in detail In the statement, details of the regulation were provided. According to the regulation, sellers will be obliged to provide security information about their products in a clear and understandable manner. Ads will include manufacturer or importer information, contact address, and product safety details. Thus, consumers will be able to access more information about the product before purchasing. This way, citizens will be able to examine the product while shopping online as if in a physical store. Removed from publication within 24 hours Online marketplaces will store security information about products in their systems. When inappropriate products are identified, the ads for these products will be removed within 24 hours. Citizens will be provided with a compliant and safer shopping environment. These marketplaces will create contact points where citizens can inquire about product safety. Complaints, notifications, and information requests regarding product safety can be submitted through these points. REQUIREMENT OF REPRESENTATIVE FOR FOREIGN SELLERS Changes will also be made regarding companies selling products from abroad. Companies sending products from abroad will be required to appoint a local representative in Turkey. Companies that do not meet this requirement will not be able to sell to Turkey. Sanctions will be imposed on those who do not comply with the regulations, and access to inappropriate content will be blocked.
