Confidence in the economy weakened in Europe in March. According to the report of the EU Commission, the economic confidence index decreased by 1.1 points on a monthly basis, falling to 95.2. The EU Commission published the results of the March business and consumer survey. Accordingly, the economic confidence index in the EU declined by 0.9 points on a monthly basis to 96 in March. In the Euro Area, the index also fell to 95.2 with a 1.1 point decrease during the same period. Market expectations were for the index to be at 97 in the Euro Area. The release of the data below expectations was noteworthy. The Euro Area Consumer Confidence Index also dropped from -13.6 to -14.5 in March. Thus, a weakening in consumers’ overall economic expectations was observed in the Euro Area. In the EU, the index decreased by 1 point to -13.9 in March.
