49.6% of Turkey’s Population Happy

The percentage of individuals who claimed to be happy in Turkey decreased from 52.7% in 2023 to 49.6% last year. According to the TURKSTAT study, 64 out of 100 people said they were hopeful about the future. The most significant problem in the country last year was the cost of living, followed by education and poverty.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) released the results of the “Life Satisfaction Survey” for the year 2024. The percentage of individuals aged 18 and over who claimed to be happy decreased by 3.1 points from 52.7% in 2023 to 49.6% in 2024. The percentage of individuals who claimed to be unhappy increased by 0.8 points from 13.7% in 2023 to 14.5% last year. The percentage of men who claimed to be happy decreased from 50.3% in 2023 to 46.9% last year. For women, this percentage decreased from 55.1% to 52.3% during the same period. MARRIED INDIVIDUALS ARE HAPPIER It was found that married individuals are happier than unmarried ones. The percentage of married individuals who claimed to be happy was 52.5% last year, while for unmarried individuals, this rate was 44%. When the happiness level of married individuals was examined by gender, it was observed that 49.5% of married men and 55.4% of married women were happy. HAPPIEST AGE GROUP IDENTIFIED When the happiness level was examined according to age groups, the happiness rate in the 25-34 age group increased from 50.7% in 2023 to 51% last year. Except for the 25-34 age group, the happiness rate decreased in all other groups. The age group with the most significant decrease in happiness rate was found to be the 45-54 age group, with a 7.1-point drop. The happiness rate in this age group decreased from 53.6% in 2023 to 46.5% last year. The happiness rate in the 55-64 age group was estimated to decrease by 2.2 points from the previous year to 47.5%. In individuals aged 65 and older, this rate decreased from 56% in 2023 to 54.1% in 2024. FAMILY AS THE SOURCE OF HAPPINESS When looking at the individuals’ sources of happiness, the percentage of those who stated that their families make them the happiest was 72.9% in 2024, followed by 13.2% for children, 4.2% for themselves, 3.4% for their spouse, 3% for their parents, and 1.9% for their grandchildren. When the values that individuals consider the source of happiness were examined, the percentage of those who stated that being healthy makes them the most happy was 68.3% last year. This was followed by 14.4% for love, 8.9% for success, 6.4% for money, and 1.8% for work. 64 OUT OF 100 PEOPLE ARE HOPEFUL FOR THE FUTURE The percentage of individuals who declared themselves hopeful about their future was 64.3% in 2024. The rate of men hopeful about their future was 63.6%, while for women, this rate was calculated as 64.9%. In order to calculate the overall life satisfaction level that individuals feel when thinking about their lives as a whole, an average value was calculated between “zero for not satisfied at all” and “ten for very satisfied.” The average life satisfaction level of individuals was 5.7 in 2023 and 2024. While the average life satisfaction level for men increased by 0.1 point from 5.6 in 2023 to 5.7 last year, for women, this average life satisfaction level, which was 5.8 in that period, decreased by 0.1 to 5.7 last year. HIGHEST SATISFACTION IN LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICES When the satisfaction levels from public services were examined, in 2024, 72.1% of individuals were satisfied with the law enforcement services, followed by 67.4% for transportation, 63.2% for healthcare, 58.8% for Social Security Institution, 55.9% for judiciary, and 53.5% for education services. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE COST OF LIVING When the most important problem in the country was examined, the cost of living was at the forefront with 29.2% last year, followed by education at 15.7% in the second place, and poverty at 14% in the third place.
