$230 Million Agreement Between Ball Aerospace and NASA

BAE Systems has secured a $230.6 million contract with NASA as part of NOAA’s Lagrange 1 Series space weather project. The company will develop and integrate spacecraft and support flight operations. The satellites, planned to be launched between 2029 and 2032, will monitor solar-induced space weather events to provide critical early warnings.
BAE Systems has won a $230.6 million contract with NASA to deliver spacecraft for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Lagrange 1 Series space weather project. Under the fixed-price contract announced on February 21, BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems, formerly known as Ball Aerospace, will develop the Lagrange 1 Series spacecraft and support mission operations.
Work related to the contract, set to begin this month, will be conducted in Colorado, Boulder until January 2034. The spacecraft are expected to be launched between 2029 and 2032.
Moreover, BAE Systems is also building the Space Weather Follow On Lagrange 1 mission planned to be launched as early as September under NASA’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe.
Observations in the sun and near-Earth space environment provide satellite operators with forecasts and warnings for extreme events.
During recent geomagnetic storms, these warnings have helped mitigate the impacts on the electrical grid, air traffic, communication, and navigation. NASA and NOAA will jointly manage the development, launch testing, and operation of the Lagrange 1 Series satellites.
